"In learning you will teach, and in teaching you will learn." PHIL COLLINS

THE BASICS

My name is Emily Brown. I am currently a 6th grade math teacher at the Dubai American Academy in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. Previously, I have taught 7th and 8th grade math at Irving Middle School in Lincoln, Nebraska. I completed my undergraduate education at the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls, Iowa after student teaching in Denver, Colorado in both general high school and IB settings. I will complete my Master's degree in math education from Southwest Minnesota State University in June 2021. Originally from Austin, Minnesota, I made the trip to Iowa for college because of UNI's wonderful reputation in education. I have an older brother and two younger sisters; family is one of the most important things in my life. My husband, Jordy, and I have been teaching internationally in Dubai for the past 3 years.

WHY MATH?

I have always loved math because of its logical and clear nature. Throughout my secondary education, algebra and geometry were always the most fun classes to go to. In college, I still found math equally as thrilling. From writing proofs in Euclidean Geometry to finding the area under a curve in Calculus to delving deeper into the world of prime numbers in Modern Algebra, learning in math never stops and I find myself getting excited over and over again to teach students to do math. Teaching Algebra and Pre-Algebra to middle school students for the past 5 years has allowed me to share my love of mathematics with students while helping them discover themselves along the way.

CONTRIBUTIONS

At UNI, I was a Resident Assistant in the residence halls, gave tours of campus and interacted with prospective students as a Student Admissions Ambassador, and was involved with summer orientation and advising for incoming freshmen. At Irving, I have continued this love of getting involved by coaching middle school track and field. During my time at DAA, I have coached middle school swimming and been a part of multiple committees dedicated to furthering innovation and efficiency within the school.

INTERESTS

When I am not spending time in the classroom, I love to read, knit and crochet, bake, and be creative in any way, including painting and drawing. I am also very passionate about music and love to play piano, sing, and play viola. Being active is also very important to me; I stay energized through biking, swimming, and simply walking in nature. Another passion that I hold is learning about other cultures. I have traveled to Brazil, Chile, Peru, and Belize to strengthen my Spanish-speaking skills and learn more about South American cultures. Traveling excites me and I cannot wait to travel to many other places in the future.

MY PASSION

Although I hold a degree in mathematics education and teaching is my true passion, I feel that education is so much more than what goes on in a classroom. Bringing my unique experiences and hobbies into a classroom to share with my students, while also encouraging students to explore their own interests, is something very important to me. It is my hope that my students will not only be learning math, but at the same time learning about life, and I will be learning along with them.
